Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is a technique by which companies can increase their visibility on search engines, with many companies offering SEO services, SEO Global Inc. an online marketing services company, are able to provide cost effective and successful SEO services.
Some might consider SEO as being a relatively new phenomena, but it’s worth noting that the internet itself was only “invented” in 1983, and the world’s first website was made as recently as 1991 when Tim Berners-Lee launched his single page site. SEO has pretty much been around since then, so it can be considered as being almost as old as the world wide web itself.
Of course, it has evolved since those early days, as has the internet and the web. The first real act of SEO was attributed to Eric Moses in 1994 when he developed a link building system. This had nothing to do with the search engine rankings we understand today, but nonetheless could be considered as SEO in that it was based on relevancy and connections, the things Google looks for, and rewards, today.
Google, following its birth in 1998, found that it was being too easily manipulated by crude SEO techniques, so decided to introduce the first algorithm, Florida, in 2003. This was able to beat the old techniques being used by spammers.
2005 saw a concentrated effort by Google to clean up blog links and comments placed purely to get rankings, and also saw the introduction of the Jagger and Big Daddy algorithms to help block link farms and other suspicious activities.
One of the key moments in SEO came in 2008 when Google launched the suggestion box, enabling SEO companies to get more insight into user’s thinking and moving the focus away from general keywords and towards much more focused keywords.
On 2011, Google released the Panda algorithm, and with it came the realisation that Google was placing much weight on content when it comes to compiling its rankings. Sites with poor content quickly found themselves dropping down the rankings.
The release of the Penguin algorithm in 2012 signalled Google’s intention to hound down so-called Black Hat SEO, those SEO companies who adopted unacceptable tactics to manipulate rankings.
2015 – 2016
Inbound marketing, the creation of content to attract traffic, was now mainstream, and the SEO mantra “Content is King” was born. In 2015 Google introduced the RankBrain algorithm, aimed at producing smarter search results. A year later, Google confirmed it’s 3 highest ranking priorities hierarchy as being Links-Content-RankBrain.
That brings us right up to date, with the only certainty being that as Google and other search engines continue to evolve, so will SEO and SEO companies.
